Marcus has come and gone from Claire's life since college but now reappears in Rome just as she's about to decide what's next. Before her, Rome's main train station, Termini. She joins the flow of people flooding in. There's a glass-walled bookstore, bright and busy, just to her left, and she catches a glimpse of her reflection. But, oh, would you look at that? My car has taken on a new sputtering sound and is jolting . . . literally jolting like this is the early 2000s and I installed hydraulics. All I need are purple lights under my car and I’m set to time travel!But it’s time for both of us to stop padding our lives so we don’t feel bumps in the road anymore. I think we’ll get hurt a lot in this life, but maybe it’s worth it because sometimes we will experience really amazing things, too. Maybe not everything will end in hurt. But we’ll never know if we don’t try.” Claire is so wishy-washy in her priorities that I became disinterested in her journey. This might have been affected by Liam Callanan's narrative drive; while the framework is there, the plot meanders so much that it becomes tough to follow. The second-chance romance blossoming between Claire and Marcus is mildly interesting but, again, Marcus doesn't have much going for him besides the fact that he's a successful actor and has loved Claire for decades. While she doesn't feature heavily in the story, Claire's daughter Dorothy behaves more like a nineteen-year-old than a twenty-nine-year-old, inserting at least one abbreviation in each of her texts (think "G2G" or similar) and bemoaning how "old people" think. But Claire’s false belief in mutually-exclusive futures and her indecision about those futures dragged on and on. Claire goes to Yale where she makes a very good female friend and also falls for Marcus. Her nascent desire to become a nun remains even as Claire takes a post graduation real estate job where her specialty is the sale of ecclesiastical buildings.
