About this deal

Yes, that’ll be alright love,’ she said cheerfully when I explained about needing someone to interview for the feature, ‘When would you like to come? JUST weeks away from the centenary of the birth of famous medium Doris Stokes, a new book is being released this month about her life and achievements.

The book examines the extraordinary phenomenon that Doris unleashed at the time, which is still continuing to this day. Which made it the perfect moment – the Features Editor decided one morning, chewing her pen thoughtfully as the sun sweltered in through the non-opening windows of our new office – for a light, not too serious series on the supernatural. Doris May Fisher Stokes (January 6, 1920 - May 8, 1987), born Doris Sutton, was a British spiritualist and psychic medium. In Innocent Voices In My Ear, Doris tells of her special relationship with children and her psychic communications with children of every age; from the heroic young men of the Falklands War, to the sixteen-year-old hostage of a .

This unique collection includes the two best–selling books in which Doris Stokes shared her remarkable experiences with readers throughout the world. Doris Stokes possessed an amazing gift – exceptional psychic powers that over the years of her extraordinary life brought joy and comfort to thousands of people. Born on January 6, 1920, Doris passed on May 8, 1987, following surgery at a NW London hospital for a brain tumour.

Stokes's death coincided with the publication of Catholic author Ian Wilson's 1987 book, The After Death Experience, in which he presented a detailed exposé of her methods. However, when hospital nurses had asked her whether she would like to speak to anybody about this decision, she had asked to speak to Doris Stokes.During a crisis of confidence in 1962, she gave up her work as a medium and retrained as a psychiatric nurse, [5] but had to retire five years later following an attack by a patient.

In 1980, her first, written with Linda Dearsley, autobiographical volume, Voices In My Ear: The Autobiography of a Medium was published, pulling her further into the public eye in the UK. Our books regularly hit the bestseller lists, and we have powered countless authors to household-name status. However, when the participants were questioned after the performance, it turned out that each of them had been invited by Stokes. I think people warmed to Doris because of her natural mumsy style and the fact that she was exactly the same on and off stage. If Doris hadn’t passed when she did, I thought, ‘I wonder what other titles they would have been able to think of using voices? As explained, people with unusual abilities – little echoes of Doris – kept crossing my path like beads on a string, each one unknowingly revealing another strand of the mystery.
